Rabies Vaccination Policy: Keeping Our Community Safe

At Severna Park Veterinary Hospital, the health and safety of your pets, your family, and our veterinary team are always a top priority. As part of our commitment to providing a safe environment for everyone who enters our hospital, we would like to remind you of our rabies vaccination policy.

All canine and feline patients visiting Severna Park Veterinary Hospital are required to have a current rabies vaccination unless there is a documented medical reason that prevents vaccination.

Why is rabies vaccination so important?

  • Protecting Pets and People
    Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease that can affect both animals and people. Keeping pets appropriately vaccinated helps protect your pet, other animals in our hospital, our clients, and the veterinary professionals who care for them.
  • Meeting Maryland Requirements
    Maryland law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets four months of age and older to be appropriately vaccinated against rabies.
  • Supporting Preventive Care
    Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccination current is an important part of routine preventive healthcare and helps us provide the safest possible care for every patient.

What does this mean for your pet’s next visit?

  • If your pet was vaccinated elsewhere:
    Please send us a copy of your pet’s current rabies vaccination certificate before your appointment so we can update their medical record.
  • If your pet is overdue or has never been vaccinated:
    Our veterinary team will discuss updating the rabies vaccination with you at your pet’s visit. In most cases, the vaccine will need to be administered as part of the appointment.
  • If your pet has a medical condition that may prevent vaccination:
    We understand that there are circumstances in which vaccination may not be medically appropriate. One of our veterinarians will evaluate your pet and discuss whether a medical exemption is appropriate.
