Severna Park Veterinary Hospital Pre Surgery Medications
Pre Surgery Medications
Your pet has been prescribed medication(s) to be given prior to their scheduled surgical procedure. The American College of Veterinary Anesthesia recommends that patients receive presurgical medications to ensure a safe and calm procedure. Previously these were all given by injection the morning of surgery. We have recently updated our protocols to dispense the medication orally to lower the stress of your pet when they arrive and during their visit.
Pre-surgical medications may be prescribed to:
- ✅ Reduce pain and inflammation before it begins (preemptive pain control)
- ✅ Lower the risk of infection
- ✅ Decrease anxiety and stress
- ✅ Reduce nausea or vomiting
- ✅ Improve overall surgical safety and recovery
Administering these medications as directed helps us provide the safest anesthesia and the most comfortable recovery for your pet. If you cannot give your pet the oral medication or forget to give the medication, please let us know and we can give these medications by injection prior to their procedure in the hospital.
Please follow the instructions for the medications on the bottle and do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
